 WELCOME BY THE CHAIRMAN

The Chairman welcomed everyone to the 2022 Annual General Meeting of Croft Bowling Association, and especially welcomed any new members. Thank you all for your valued attendance.

On everyone’s seats there was a copy of the 2021 year-end accounts our Treasurer

Marleen Thomason will expand upon them later in the proceedings under Item 7 of the agenda.  Any comments will be welcomed at that time.

Our Membership Secretary Janet Bevin could not attend tonight and her apologies are given.  Anne Lamming, Committee member being ably assisted by Lyn Loughead were on hand to complete the registrations. A new style membership card, where applicable, was given to any new members of the Association. The full year membership was now set at £30.00 along with the other fees as outlined in my letter to you all of 13 February 2022.

This is my sixth report as the Chairman of the Association but my seventh year in the role as there was no AGM in 2021. I did write to members on a couple of occasions to communicate matters as they arose during what was again another unprecedented year under COVID restrictions.

The sponsored Sunday members only competitions started again in July of 2021 following a year and a half without them.  There will be a full year of competitions during 2022 and I would urge you to support them as they do act as a fund raiser as well we being a chance to meet up and have a lovely day (with me officiating as necessary) and thank you in advance to Lawrence and Elaine Grundy who have confirmed that they will organise the events.

As always the Association’s thanks go to the valued work undertaken by the Monday volunteers for their great work in keeping the grounds and property in tip-top shape being (Moi) Derek Ryder, Steve Grimshaw, Paul Ogden, Paul Caddick and Chris McDermott.  Also to those who may have made it occasionally Paul Reynolds and Brian Cooper.  (Tea and biscuits mainly).

The Association also thanks our green-keeper Jimmy Potter who did a fantastic job in keeping the green in great condition and has continued throughout the closed season with essential maintenance.  The green will be open initially for social and competition bowling on Saturday 26 March.

Again thanks to the Sharpe family for cutting and keeping the tops and outside of the hedges neat and tidy twice a year.

The current cleaning arrangements of the pavilion and daily opening of the Association’s facilities continue to work well and our thanks go to Julie Boon and Harry Bent respectively.

The Association has again been chosen to host the Lancashire Merit Final which will this year be held in May, further details will follow.  The Lancashire County may also wish to hold two other finals. We will wait and see on these and if we do, then details will follow through the website and notice boards.

Your Committee and its Officer’s have once again worked tirelessly and seamlessly (even in these unprecedented times) to ensure the effective running of the Association’s affairs.  My personal thanks are given to them for their continuing contributions.

I am pleased to confirm, as mentioned previously, that the green will open on Saturday

26 March at 1000 hours.

A final thank you to all of those who have helped in setting up the room and preparing and serving wine and cheese for the evening.

Before I hand over, can I please ask that at the end of the meeting, members please help to clear away the chairs and tables.

Thank you and I will now hand over to the very delicate Elaine Grundy for item 6 on the agenda – Secretary’s report.

 SECRETARY’S REPORT

As of this evening I have not received any proposals from members to be raised tonight.  We do have one question from Gail Grimshaw with regard to the defibrillator in the pavilion, she asked when was the last time it was serviced and does it get serviced, batteries etc. How do we know it works?  Has anyone had training and if so who?  If not can training be made available – if not for all – then Team Captains?  These queries will be addressed by Derek.  All have been addressed in the past when the defibrillator was bought by the Association.

I would like to say a special thank you to Derek and Janet for saving the day with regard to sending out all the information members needed for tonight.  I have had terrible technical problems, not having internet access for over two weeks and then being unable to send out the information.  Janet and Derek between them managed to send all the paperwork out, I am so grateful to them both.

I am expecting shortly the information from the Lancashire County Crown Green Bowling Association asking for any changes to our teams.  If there are any Captains of our

12 teams in attendance here tonight, could they please let me know of any changes to their registered players including registration numbers as soon as possible?  I will shortly be sending out an email to this effect to all Captains.

The Committee have held no meetings since the last AGM due to the pandemic.  A meeting was arranged to take place on 12 January but unfortunately this did not take place for the same reasons.

As the Chairman has just mentioned the first Competition will be the Opening Main to be held on Sunday 3 April, there is a form for completion at the back of the hall for those wishing to enter.  Hopefully members will support this Competition.  Lawrence will be running the Competition as usual and as Derek has mentioned the form will be on display in the pavilion until after the weekend in order for Lawrence to complete the draw and put up the entrance list showing the pairings and groups.

As the Chairman has also just mentioned we had a very successful Sunday in June last year all were impressed by our green and facilities.  My contact at Lancashire County Crown Green Bowling Association (LCGBA), Graham Royles has asked if we would host the final yet again, this time on a date in May (still to be confirmed).  The members of the Association were very generous with their time last year, arriving early to erect the gazebo and set up all the cooking equipment.  Special thanks must go to Peter Rowles who provided the burgers and bacon. Thanks also to all the ladies who baked for the occasion, making drinks, looking after the kitchen, cooking under the gazebo and serving the refreshments. I come to you all on bended knee to ask if you have the time could you please repeat your generous offer.

As I have just mentioned we had terrific feedback from last year, Graham Royles has said he hoped there will be more entries for the competition as everyone who entered said it was a very challenging green with great facilities.  We as members know it is a challenging green!  Graham also said he wouldn’t be surprised if we were chosen to host other matches in the future.  This would really be a feather in our cap.

 Safeguarding Officer

For the last few years Jenny Daniels has been our Safeguarding Officer, Jenny has now left the Club as she has moved to the Wirral.  We have been very fortunate in that Linda Ogden has offered to undertake this role.  She is eminently qualified to undertake this task and will provide her certificate of competence as soon as she receives it.  All her details will be displayed on the notice board in the pavilion alongside her certificate.  I would like to thank Linda for agreeing to undertake this important task.  A large number of you will know Linda as she is Captain of our Tuesday night second ladies’ team who came over from Daten in Culcheth when it closed.

Could I please ask Linda to stand up so everyone can see her especially those who don’t actually know her.

 TRACK AND TRACE FORMS

I also would like to thank all members who signed the Track and Trace forms each time they played at the green it was much appreciated (these were situated under the terrace outside the pavilion).  Fortunately we, as far as I am aware, did not need to use the information but they were a rule laid down by the Government in order for us to play.

Lastly can I please remind you to ensure that you sign the attendance register tonight before you leave the meeting.

 TREASURER’S REPORT

Good evening everyone, especially the Wire supporters who were always otherwise engaged on a late February Friday evening.

I will not bore you by analysing the whole of the last two years.

Derek has eloquently kept you up to date with his “Chronicles of Croft Bowling Association”.  Expenditure for 2021 exceeded income by £759.95, most of which was much needed green treatments.

Compared with 2019 which was the last full year of bowling.  Subscriptions increased by £700.00 and the Lancashire Merit Final by £236.00.

Interesting statistic – Refreshment in 2019 were £1,720.00 with three competitive Men’s teams, refreshments in 2021 raised £1,821 with six competitive men’s teams.  I feel sure that the shortfall was due to the Thursday ‘B’ team having to move to Wednesday.  They had no barmaids and worst of all no Mild was to be had anywhere!  Sorry to say that problem seems to be carrying on into this year.

We were able to stage four Sunday competitions raising £1,294.40 including refreshments.

As a gesture of goodwill in 2021 League Fees were paid by the Association, 2022 will revert back to normal.

 MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY’S REPORT

Our last AGM was held on 28 February 2020 at which time our membership numbered 156 in 2019.

Due to the pandemic, we didn’t hold our AGM in 2021 but our membership rose to 162 during 2020.

2021, despite Covid rules etc was very busy so that our membership now stands at 183.

Being able to pay subs by BACS seemed to be very well received by members and certainly helped in very speedy payment of subs – much appreciated by me! This option will also be available this year.

The web site has proved to be very useful and several new members have found Croft Bowling by this method.

Thanks again to Anne who will again be helping to collect subscriptions this evening, which will be £30 this year.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS AND COMMITTEEE FOR 2022/23

Currently 10 Committee Members – a minimum quorum of six is required.

We had 12 – two retired Steve Adams and Brian Birchall.

 We have a new nomination for tonight to make up the Committee’s 11 members;

Paul Reynolds, Proposed by Stan Gittins and Seconded by Thomas Gittins

 ELECTION OF AUDITOR

Roger Branford White for this current year.  He was duly elected by a show of hands from the members.

 PRESIDENT’S REMARKS

As explained on the Agenda the President has no executive position this is Honorary only and is held by Eric and Audrey Stokes.

 CROFT BOWLING ASSOCIATION WEBSITE

Derek presented David Sawyer’s report in the absence of David.  We now have a new website “Word Press” is better value for money £250.00 pa to £50.00 pa.  The website is slightly different but easier to navigate and someone said to me last night that he thought it looked better also.

David has been responsible for the “swap” over and has spent quite some time dealing with its change-over and recent updates.

 ANY OTHER BUSINESS

Gail Grimshaw raised the subject of the defibrillator.  She asked about the original cost which was £1,200.00, it is battery operated, if the greenlight is flashing then it is in working order.  If the red light flashes it requires a new battery.

Regular testing is undertaken by a specialist firm in Irlam (GMAS).

The next AGM will (subject to no restrictions) take place on Friday 24 February 2023 at 7.30pm in Croft Memorial Hall.

The AGM meeting concluded at 8.30pm

 Annual General Meeting – 2021

Please find below a copy of the letter from our chairman Derek Ryder regarding this year’s Annual General Meeting which was scheduled for 26th February. Due to the current restrictions the AGM will not now take place. Derek’s letter brings us all up to date with the current situation and we thank him for that. Once we have a better idea of how the season is going to take shape we will contact everyone with those details, and we look forward to the day when we can all meet up once again.

Firstly, I would extend my good wishes to you all for the coming year of 2021 and trust that matters turn out better than they have unfolded during 2020.

The main purpose of my writing is to inform you that due to current rules and restrictions (in respect of the Coronavirus Pandemic) the Association’s Annual General Meeting which was scheduled for Friday 26 February 2021 will not take place We will also not be able to hold it ‘virtually’ due to the logistics of its member makeup.

As is normal we would write to the Association’s members at least four weeks before any intended AGM. (Albeit there will be no AGM for the foreseeable future). However things are quite different now and this letter takes the place of any AGM.

There have been no communications whatsoever (since the end of last summer) from the British Crown Green Bowling Association in respect of the re-start of bowling activities. Accordingly we have no pointers into which direction we will travel. We don’t know whether any type of bowling will be allowed to take place in 2021 (but optimism abounds having regard to current progress against COVID-19).

Throughout 2020 I have written on a couple of occasions to you all with a ‘newsletter’ and other communications in an attempt to ‘keep in touch’ during these challenging times. Accordingly, if any of you wish to raise any matters going forward (no matter how small). I would be obliged if you would liaise with our Secretary Elaine Grundy with a deadline for contact on 12 February 2021.

As you know at our Annual General Meetings we have where required, a period of reflection with a ‘minute’s silence’ for members who have passed away during the year. It is with profound sadness to remind you of those who have passed and I trust that you can take some ‘virtual’ time out for a minute at least to remember them.

Our Treasurer Marleen Thomason has provided me with her latest figures and rather than attaching a balance sheet, I am giving the figure for 31 December 2020 against the balance as at the end of December 2019 at our 2020 AGM.

£11,285.66 this includes monies in the Reserve Account, Current Account and cash in hand for the period to end of December 2019.  The current balance for the year end of December 2020 is £9,061.69 giving a year on year deficit of £2,223.97.

The income for the 2020 year was £5,107.54 and costs were at £7,331.51 giving the deficit of £2,223.97.  Whilst it is appreciated that the generosity of the Association’s members payment of 2020 subscriptions (to be retained by the Association) was truly a fantastic gesture, there was a circa £900.00 shortfall.  Also as there were no Sunday competitions this has resulted in a further £1,876.00 shortfall of income.  There would also have been a further circa £300.00 from visiting bookings and beverage sales thus giving a potential total lost income of circa £3,000.00 which would have made the 2020 figure in line with that of 2019.

My thanks again go to Marleen for her commitment in keeping the books in good order, making cheque payments and visits to the bank (which are hard to find these days) and keeping the purse strings tight in a difficult year for the Association.

As you will be aware since the first lockdown back in late March last year there has been no league or competition bowling.  No Sunday competitions which had led to a vast reduction in revenue from entry fees, footer fees and refreshments.  We were fortunate to have had a great bunch of members who in the main paid a year’s subscription and a few others who paid half year along with some new members.  The Association’s costs continued to be incurred for such items as insurance, water, electricity, green maintenance, green treatments (for fertiliser, hollow tining, verti-draining etc.) general maintenance of the pavilion, new seats, mower repairs, green bins etc.

I have had an update from our Membership Secretary Janet Bevin and the end of year totals are as follows:

Full143

Concessions 4

Honorary    1

Non-playing    4

Free 4

Juniors    7

Total    162

The total membership is a total to be proud of and my thanks again go to Janet for her tenacity in encouraging new membership and the keeping of the register during a difficult year for the Association.

My thanks go to the regular volunteers who during a difficult time for ‘movement’ have committed to their Monday morning duties (and sometimes Thursdays) to keep the surrounds and outside of the green in ‘tip top’ appearance. There is no cost to the volunteer work which saves the Association vast sums in not having to employ and pay outside contractors.

I’m not sure how many of the members have visited the green during the pandemic (subject to being able to leave home) but can confirm that the playing area is in good condition and is crying out to have some bowls rolled on it. Thanks go to our Greenkeeper Jimmy Potter for his great work in maintaining and improving its condition.

My thanks are given to our Secretary Elaine Grundy who has assisted me greatly in grant application work and carrying out all of the administration, typing and distribution of communications to members.

I would confirm that all of the existing Committee members and officers have agreed to stay on until at least the next AGM (hopefully) in February 2022 and would thank them for their continuing dedication and commitment to the Association.

Finally, it goes without saying that without its members there would be no Association and I would thank you for your continuing support.  I will write to you further in regard to 2021 subscriptions and hopefully we will be able to maintain our strong membership going forward.  In the event that bowling cannot take place in 2021 then our costs for the year will be similar to that incurred in 2020, ie circa £7,000.00.  If we have no income then the current funds of circa £9,000 will be reduced to £2,000.00

Thank you for your time and patience in reading this communication and trust that we may all be able to be back mixing and playing bowls soon.

The minutes of the meeting held on 22 February 2019 had been sent to all members and no comments had been received.  They were therefore approved as a true and correct record andwere signed by the Chairman.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The Chairman presented this following report:

“This is my fourth report as the Chairman of the Association and I will be as quick as I can. 2019 was an indifferent season for our bowling teams with most holding their own but unfortunately the Ladies Tuesday Evening Team were relegated after gaining promotion from the previous year.  The Men’s Thursday Night ‘A’ Team who gained promotion in 2018 to the ‘A’ Division of the Newton and District Bowling League finished in third position and once again won ‘folding money’ which allowed the team this year to have a two course meal and drinks at the annual end of season get together.

The sponsored Sunday members’ competitions were again successful and well attended.  Don’t forget the first competition for 2020 is the Opening Main on 29 March and a sheet is available tonight for any entrants.

The current cleaning arrangements of the pavilion and daily opening and closing of the Association’s facilities continue to work well and our thanks go to Julie Boon and Harry Bent respectively.

The Association’s thanks are given again to the valued work undertaken by the Monday morning volunteers for their sterling work in keeping the grounds and property in tip top shape especially to our leader Brian Birchall, Derek Ryder, Steve Adams, Rod Bevin, Steve Grimshaw, Dave Pownall, Eric Stokes and also to those who made it occasionally, Mansell Osman, Jim Thomason, Joe Crotty and Barry France.

The Association wishes to thank our green-keeper Jimmy Potter and also Dave Pownall who deputised for Jimmy whilst recovering from surgery.  Jimmy has continued with the close season treatment and general maintenance for the 2020 season.  The green is looking lush and is now just receiving its final treatment prior to the opening in March.

Our thanks go to the Sharpe family for the twice a year cut to the surrounding hedges.  A fine and lasting legacy from their father Alan.

Again this year the Association has been chosen to host the Lancashire Merit Final which is to be held on Sunday 14 June where there will be 32 of Lancashire’s best bowlers.  All will be welcome to attend and watch this prestigious event.  We are delighted once again to be hosts to the final.  Food and drinks will be served on the day so we will require volunteers to help in the kitchen to prepare and serve the refreshments.  Further details will be on the pavilion notice board in due course.

Your committee have once again worked tirelessly and seamlessly to ensure the effective and efficient running of the Association’s affairs and my thanks are given to them for their contributions throughout the year.

It is with great pleasure to announce that we co-opted a new member to the committee in the summer last year.  Sylvia Sumner had expressed a desire to join the committee and we are pleased to have her as a member.

I am pleased to announce that the green will open on Saturday 21 March at 1000 hrs.

Finally, thank you for all of those who have helped in setting up the room and preparing and serving the wine and cheese for this evening. Before I hand over can I please ask that at the end of the meeting could members help to clear away chairs and tables.

Thank you and I will now handover to Elaine Grundy for item 6 on the agenda – Secretary’s report.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

“The Secretary reported that she would like to thank the members who have informed her that they could not attend the AGM.  Their apologies have been noted earlier in the minutes of this meeting. As of this evening I have not received any proposals from members to be raised tonight. I am expecting shortly the information from the Lancashire County Crown Green Bowling Association asking for any changes to our teams.  If there are any Captains of our nine teams in attendance here tonight could they please let me know of any changes to their registered players including registration numbers as soon as possible?  I will shortly be sending out an email to this effect to all Captains.

The Committee have held nine meetings during the year and have also worked diligently and tirelessly for the Association over the past 12 months as have the Monday morning volunteers who keep the green in splendid order.

As the Chairman has just mentioned the first Competition will be the Opening Main to be held on Sunday 29 March, there is a form for completion at the back of the hall for those wishing to enter.  Hopefully members will support this Competition.

As the Chairman has also just mentioned we had a very successful Sunday in June last year when we hosted the Lancashire Senior Merit Final, the event was very well attended and all were impressed by our green and facilities.  Because of this we have been chosen to host the final yet again, this time on Sunday 14 June. I should also mention Sylvia Sumner who very kindly after the event donated a gas catering grill; thus saving us a considerable amount of money as we no longer have to hire one for similar events; thank you Sylvia for this very thoughtful gift.

As I have just mentioned we had terrific feedback from last year, Graham Royles who is my contact in the Lancashire bowling fraternity has said he hoped there will be more entries for the competition as everyone who entered said it was a very challenging green with great facilities.  We as members know it is a challenging green!  Graham also said he wouldn’t be surprised if we were chosen to host a County match in the future.  This would really be a feather in our cap.

We are also running the Carnival stall this year, if anyone has any spare time on Carnival Day which is Saturday 4 July, please let me know, it would only be for an hour or so as we have a rota for manning the stall.

Lastly can I please remind you to ensure that you sign the attendance register tonight before you leave the meeting.

TREASURER’S REPORT

“The Treasurer reported that income exceeded expenditure by £2,228, this was not just because of the grant from Warrington Borough Council but the fact that there was no major expenditure as in 2018. Car Boot Sales were poor and it was decided that this form of fund raising has run its course, therefore no more getting up a 0530 hrs.The other fund raising event was the Christmas Fair which cost £25.00 for hire of the tables and takings were £51.70 reduced to £51.50 by a Jersey 20p piece. Competition takings were down by £354.50 hopefully they will be better patronised this coming year. The Lancashire Senior Merit final raised £319.50 but expenditure totalled £259.20.  We earned many kudos according to messages on the W&NCBA message board, this year we wil have learned lessons on the expenditure side.

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY’S REPORT

“The Membership Secretary reported that our membership numbered 156 last year which is fairly steady year on year. Barry France has organised a new Monday night team which has already resulted in a new member for this year – well done Barry. I am sure that our web site will prove useful again – it gives plenty of information to interest any potential new bowlers.

Anne Lamming and I are collecting subscriptions this evening, this remains at £28.00 this year and is still good value when you consider how many hours of bowling you can have throughout the season. I would really appreciate the prompt payment of subscriptions – thank you.”

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The Chairman presented this following report:

This is my third report as the Chairman of the Association and I will be as quick as I can.

2018 was a good year for the teams:

The Tuesday Evening Ladies gaining promotion.  Well done.  Croft 1 Thursday Afternoon Ladies gaining promotion.  Well done.  Croft ‘A’ Thursday Evening Newton & District Men’s fourth position which is the highest ever won folding money.  Well done.

The sponsored Sunday members’ competitions were well attended for all of the events.

The new arrangements for the cleaning contractor continued to work well in 2018.  Thanks go to Julie Booth.

The arrangements for the daily opening and closing of the facilities also continued to work well in 2018.  Thanks to Harry Bent.

The Association’s thanks are given again to the valued work undertaken by the Monday morning volunteers for their sterling work in keeping the grounds and property in tip top shape.  My personal thanks go to:  Our Leader Brian Birchall, Steve Adams, Rod Bevin, Joe Crotty, Barry France, Steve Grimshaw, Mansell Osman, Dave Pownall, Eric Stokes, Jim Thomason and “moir”.  Work starts again in earnest on 4 March – new volunteers would be made very welcome.  A number of us will start back on Monday 25 February in order to mow the grass surrounding the green as the weather is set fair.

The Association wishes to thank our green-keeper Jimmy Potter who has looked after the green so well throughout the year including the closed season period.

Our thanks also go the Sharpe family for the twice yearly cut to the surrounding hedges.

The Association has been chosen to host the Lancashire Merit Final which is to be held on Sunday 9 June where there will be 32 of Lancashire’s best bowlers.  All are welcome to attend to watch the final.  This is a prestigious event and we are delighted that we have been chosen to host.  Food and drinks will be served so volunteers are needed to man the kitchento serve these refreshments.

Finally it is pleasing to report that your Committee have worked tirelessly and seamlessly to ensure the effective and efficient running of the Association’s affairs.

I would place on record my tanks for their continued support.  However it is with regret that I have to report the resignation of our new President Paul Caddick from the position of President and Committee members.

I am pleased to announce that the green will open on Saturday 30 March at 1000 hrs.

Finally thank you for all those who have helped in setting up the hall and preparing and serving the wine and cheese.

Can you please at the end of the meeting help to clear away chairs and tables.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

“The Secretary reported that she would like to thank the members who have informed her that they could not attend the AGM.  Their apologies have been noted earlier in the minutes of this meeting.

As of this evening I have not received any proposals from members to be raised tonight.

The Committee have held nine meetings during the year and have also worked diligently and tirelessly for the Association over the past 12 months.

On Friday last I received the information from the Lancashire County Crown Green Bowling Association asking for any changes to our teams.  If there are any Captains of our nine teams in attendance here tonight could they please let me know of any changes to their registered players including registration numbers as soon as possible?  I will shortly be sending out an email to this effect to all Captains.

I would like to thank Jenny Daniels who is our Safeguarding Officer, she is very well qualified for this role, could I ask Jenny to stand up so that everyone here knows who you are.  All sporting facilities now have to have a Safeguarding Officer and Jenny fits that role admirably.

As the Chairman has just mentioned the first competition will be the Opening Main to be held on Sunday 14 April, there is a form for completion at the back of the hall for thosewishing to enter.  Hopefully members will support this competition.

Finally, could you also ensure that you sign the attendance register before leaving tonight.”

TREASURER’S REPORT

“The Treasurer reported that income for the year against expenditure show a deficit of £201.01 when compared to 2017 due to four one-off items amounting to £1.778.99 being repair to the pavilion door shutter, purchase of a mower and leaf blower and setting up of the website.

Good income was generated from members subscriptions, car boot sales, competitions and sale of refreshments.

The only disappointing item on the income side was the Carnival which unfortunately fell on the same day as England’s Quarter final game in the World Cup!  This year’s event should be more lucrative as we have a stock of prizes totalling £61.00.

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY’S REPORT

The Membership Secretary reported that our membership rose to 158 last year and we alrady have several promising enquiries from new bowlers wishing to join this year.

A few of these new bowlers found our club via our website which shows photographs of our green and the facilities.  It also gives them contact information for the various teams.

Anne and I are collecting subscriptions this evening which remain at £28.00 this year and is still good value when you consider how many hours of bowling you can have throughout the season.

I would really appreciate the prompt payment of subscriptions.  Thank you.”

PRESENT:

There were 59 members of the Association present.

This was followed by a one minute silence.

Apologies were received from Bob Thomson, David Bateman, David Sawyer, Frank and Jackie Wilson, Stuart Munslow, Len Joynes, Beryl Smith, Gail Grimshaw, Brenda Monger, Lilian Nixon, Jean Greig, Norman Deakin, John Brooks, Arthur Baguley, Beryl Charlton, Richard Jones.

MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING

The minutes of the meeting held on 24 February 2017 had been sent to all members and no comments had been received. They were therefore approved as a true and correct record and were signed by the Chairman. Adoption of the minutes was proposed by Andrew Mitchell and seconded by Anne Lamming.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The Chairman presented this following report:

“This is my second report as the Chairman of the Association and I will be as quick as I can.

2017 was a mixed year for our teams with some good results from the teams and not so good for others. No matter what the results I trust there has been good camaraderie within each team.

In contrast to the disappointing attendance at the Sunday sponsored competitions in 2016, I am pleased to report that there was excellent attendance at all competitions during 2017.

The new arrangements for a separate cleaning contractor and the daily opening and closing of the green and pavilion has worked well throughout 2017. The costs of this are slightly higher than the previous arrangement but will continue in 2018.

The Association’s thanks are once again given to the valued work done by the Monday morning volunteer team for their sterling work done in keeping the grounds and the property in good shape. Those people are all members being: Brian Birchall (boss man, ganger, foreman), Eric Stokes, Steve Adams, Jim Thomason, Rod Bevin, Barry France and occasionally Mansell Osman and myself.

We do need more volunteers as the current team who have done numerous volunteer years are getting older and there will soon come a time when some of them will have to retire. So if you can give a little time contact Brian Birchall or just turn up between 10 and 12 noon each Monday.

The Association’s thanks also go to the green-keeper Jim Potter for the work done throughout the year. These include the closed season period where essential maintenance is necessary for the forthcoming season.

Our thanks also once again go to the Sharpe family for hedge cutting around the outside of the green. This is carried out three times a year with one just being completed last week.

The volunteer team started back on 5 February which was a month earlier than usual as they are renovating twelve seats around the green to be in place for the opening of the new season.

Finally, it is again pleasing to report that your Committee have worked seamlessly to ensure the effective and efficient running of the Association’s affairs. I would place on record my thanks for their support during my second year in office. However, it is with regret that I have to announce that two or our long standing Committee Members Elaine Grundy (President) and Dot Bancroft (Committee) have resigned their positions from the Committee effective at the end of this meeting. However I am pleased to confirm that Elaine will continue in the valued role of Secretary.

My personal thanks go to them for the unstinting and unselfish commitment they have given in those roles in ensuring the continued success of the Association.

Dot was presented with a voucher as a thank you from the Association for the valued time she has given freely during the past eight years.”

SECRETARY’S REPORT

“The Secretary reported that she would like to thank the members who have informed her that they could not attend the AGM. Their apologies have been noted earlier in the minutes of this meeting.

The Committee have held nine meetings during the year and have also worked diligently and tirelessly for the Association over the past 12 months.

As of this evening I have not received any proposals from members to be raised tonight.

The first competition will be the Opening Main to be held on Sunday 15 April, there is a form for completion at the back of the hall for those wishing to enter. Hopefully members will support this competition.”

TREASURER’S REPORT

“Presented by the Chairman, unfortunately our Treasurer Marleen Thomason was admitted to hospital last week and is still receiving treatment for dehydration. I have spoken this afternoon with Jim, Marleen’s husband and he tells me she is responding to treatment and may be discharged over the weekend.

Marleen’s year-end report has been distributed are there any questions?

There were none.”

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY’S REPORT

“The Membership Secretary reported that last year membership totalled 148 – although we did lose a few members for various reasons, we happily gained several more.

When the new website is up and running, this will direct enquiries from any new players to the appropriate Captains – hopefully ensuring all teams are not short of players.

Anne and I are collecting subscriptions this evening – £28.00 this year which is still good value when you consider how many hours of bowling you can have throughout the season; and the excellent facilities on offer.

If you could pay subscriptions as soon as possible, this would be a great help to me.”

ELECTION OF OFFICERS AND COMMITTEE FOR 2018/19

Elaine Grundy resigned as President from the end of this meeting. There were no nominees following the sending out of the papers. However Committee Member Paul Caddick had presented himself through the Committee to be President and therefore was duly elected. Paul has also recently qualified as a Grade A referee for the British Crown Green Bowling Association.

The Committee for 2018/19 is:

President-Paul Caddick
Chairman-Derek Ryder
Treasurer-Marleen Thomason
Secretary-Elaine Grundy
Membership Secretary-Janet Bevin
Property Manager-Brian Birchall
Committee Members-Steve Adams
Rod Bevin
Anne Lamming
David Sawyer
David Stott
Joan Stott

The meeting accepted the new Committee.

ELECTION OF AUDITOR

Due to the Treasurer’s illness the year-end accounts have not yet been audited. These will be done by the end of March and all members notified in due course.

Roger White has confirmed that he is prepared to continue the Auditor’s duties for 2018.

PRESIDENT’S REMARKS

The President presented her last report as the current President:

“I would like to report on all the teams and where they finished in the 2017 season.

As is usual I will give the results of the ladies teams first.

Thursday Afternoon Croft 1 Team Captained by Irene Ryder, she said they had a very enjoyable season but alas only came 6th in the league, however with three new signings and a very determined long established team we look forward to the coming season with relish.

Janet Bevin was their outstanding player for 2017 with Irene Ryder, Norma Lamb, Beryl Charlton, Isobel Brackley, Ann Royden and the wonderful Lilian Nixon all finishing with plus averages.

The season was rounded off with a day out at the Spinner and Bergamot which continues to delight. Christmas at the Horseshoe for our annual party rounded off the year very nicely.

Thursday Afternoon Croft 2 Team Captained by Glen Haines finished 5th, their best player was Jenny Daniels.

Tuesday Evening Croft Team Captained by Janet Bevin

This was their first year in Section B after promotion last year. They played 20 matches winning four and losing 16. Very favourable comments were received from a number of teams saying how well we had played. The team finished 11th therefore they are going back to Section C.

Joan Stott had most wins, 14, Janet Bevin had the best averages which ensured them a place in the “Player of the Year” played at the end of September. The team turned out to support Joan and Janet; unfortunately for Joan she lost by a small margin in the first round. Janet went on to play in the second round where she played well but was unfortunately beaten 18-21.

Hopefully they will do well back in Section C and perhaps get promoted again and therefore in the money!

Men’s Senior Tuesday Afternoon League Teams:

A Team: Captained by Norman Deakin. Norman reported that 2017 was probably the worst season they have had with only five wins from 22 games therefore they finished 10th out of 12 in the league and are hoping to stay in Division one in 2018.

Leading the averages again was Peter Rowles, who had 14 wins from 19 played. Next Jim Potter with 12 from 19 played and then Jim Thomason who played all 19 games winning 11.

Norman has decided to relinquish his captaincy and has been replaced by Paul Caddick.

B Team: Ken Taylor’s team finished as runners-up in B Division. Their goal was to win promotion which they achieved by finishing runners-up. He said that they became a team to be reckoned with and had some memorable wins. Although never winning at Mesnes Park cost them dearly.

Their best player was Arthur Domville who played 18 and won 15 of his games followed closely by Richard Jones who won 14 out of 18 played.

C Team: Eric Stokes’ team finished 8th in the Division, they won 50% of their games. Their best player was Richard Lowton closely followed by Sam Hughes and Roy Wallis.

Men’s League Teams

Thursday Evening A Team: Captained by Derek Ryder he reported that 2017 was a demanding year with 16 registered players some only having availability to play when required. It was pleasing to note that they were (with some juggling) never short of a 10 man team.

Mixed fortunes ensued throughout the season winning the first three games then faltering and being precariously close to the bottom of the league. However the team rallied and had a good run winning their last three games finishing 8th from a division of 12 teams. The team will therefore continue in the B Division of the Thursday night league where for the first time in 2018 will be playing alongside the B team who have gained promotion from C section.
The team’s best player was Peter Rowles being 13th in the whole of league Division B from 120 players.

Thursday Evening B Team:Captained by Adam Taylor have finished 2nd in Section C. Hopefully this will mean promotion into Section B as mentioned in Derek’s report.

The three best players were Adam himself, Jim Thomason and Jim Potter.

Friday Evening TeamCaptained by Sam Hughes finished in 6th position in Section D. Their best bowlers were: Most wins – Jim Thomason and Bev Friar with 10 wins each. The best average was Jim Thomason.

I would like to mention here that a Friday night final was held at Croft and had a marvellous turnout of spectators (77). All who came along praised our facilities; we can only hope that the league will host another final here at Croft.

I would like to wish everyone a successful and enjoyable season”.

CROFT BOWLING ASSOCIATION WEBSITE

The Association is currently building a website and it is anticipated that it will be live at the start of the season. This is an exciting time for the Association in pioneering a medium for the activity of Crown Green Bowling for its local community. You will be able to look us up and see what’s on offer.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING

The minutes of the meeting held on 26 February 2016 had been sent to all members and no comments had been received.  They were therefore approved as a true and correct record andwere signed by the Chairman.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The Chairman presented this following report:

“This is my first report as the new Chairman of the Association and I will be as quick as I can.

2016 was a mixed year for our teams with some good results for both our male and female teams and not so good for others.  No matter what the results I am sure there has been good camaraderie within each team.

The sponsored Sunday competitions were well represented in regard to the opening and closing mains.  However the attendance at the other six Sunday events was extremely disappointing when compared with previous years since their inception.  Our President Elaine Grundy will comment on the competitiveness on the green later in the meeting.

The Caretaker of the pavilion has recently resigned her position; however the committee has put in place arrangements for a separate cleaning contract and the daily opening and closing of the green.

As my predecessor Andrew Mitchell has said on many occasions at these meetings.  The Association’s thanks are once again given to the valued work done by the Monday morning team for their sterling work done in keeping the ground and the property in good shape.  Those people are all members being:-  Brian Birchall (the boss) – Eric Stokes, Steve Adams, Barry France, Jim Thomason, Rod Bevin and myself.  I would bring to your attention that if it wasn’t for the unselfish contributions made by these members, the cost of carrying out the work by an outside contractor would be around £6k a year based upon an average of six hours at £25.00 an hour once a week.  We do need more volunteers as we are all getting older.  The Association’s thanks also go to the Green-keeper Jimmy Potter for the meticulous, outstanding work given throughout the year.  These include the closed season period where important maintenance of the green is necessary for the forthcoming season.

Our thanks must also go the Sharpe family for hedge cutting around the outside of the green.

We are starting back again on 6 March.  All welcome.

Briefly with regard to finances, although there have been significant costs incurred during 2016, a new replacement Combi boiler, replacement of the timbers around the green’s gutters and excessive winter maintenance costs the Committee have decided to hold the membership subscription fees at their current level of £26.00 per annum for full membership.  Our Treasurer Marleen Thomason will give further details of the finances later in her report.

It is pleasing to report that the Committee have worked seamlessly to ensure the effective and efficient running of the Associations affairs.  I would like to place on record my thanks for their support during my first year in office.  However, it is with regret that I have to announce that two of our long standing Committee members Audrey Stokes (Membership Secretary) and Eric Stokes are retiring from the Committee at the end of this meeting.  My personal thanks go to them for the unstinting and unselfish commitment they have given in ensuring the continued success of the Association.”

SECRETARY’S REPORT

“The Secretary reported that she would like to thank the members who have informed her that they could not attend the AGM.  Their apologies will be noted in the minutes of this meeting.

The Committee have held ten meetings during the year and have also worked diligently and tirelessly for the Association over the past 12 months.

As the Chairman has just mentioned the first Competition will be the Opening Main to be held on Sunday 2 April, there is a form for completion at the back of the hall for those wishing to enter.  Hopefully members will support this Competition.”

TREASURER’S REPORT

“The Treasurer reported that she wished to thank Roger Branford White for auditing the accounts.

She also reported that the deficit for the year is £2,276.26 mainly due to the purchase of the boiler (£2,600.00) plus mower repair (£200.00).  Gas and electricity had increased by £100.00 and General Maintenance includes £383.00 for gutter boards to the two sides of the green and £45.00 paint for the visitor’s pavilion.

On the income side the Car Boot Sale had to be cancelled because the Parish Council withdrew their permission to use the playing field resulting in a potential loss of £900.00.  The Social Event raised £675.00 and the President’s dinner £362.00 most of which was raffle money.  This is not classed as a fund-raising event but considering all the hard work that goes into the organisation of the event maybe it is time to increase the ticket price.  A four course meal and entertainment by a top comedian at £25.00 at the moment is somewhat under- priced. Your view, particularly from those who attended last year’s dinner would be appreciated.

Lastly, Competitions: these were down on 2015 and will be discussed later under Any Other Business”

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY’S REPORT

“The Membership Secretary reported that this year we have once again maintained membership to 141 in total which is comparable to 2015.  Unfortunately during the year we have lost four members.  We must try and encourage some new players.  Most teams are looking for new players to join them.

Janet Bevin is now taking over the Membership Secretary role and I am sure you will assist her by paying subscriptions promptly.  The subscriptions in 1999 were £17.50 and at present are £26.00 which we think represents very good value.

Finally I would just like to remind you that subscriptions can be paid this evening.”

PRESIDENT’S REMARKS

The President presented her report:

“She remarked it had been a very successful season despite some inclement weatherfollowing a lovely spring. Hopefully it will be dryer in the coming season.

She then gave a report on the performance of the teams:

As is usual she gave the results of the ladies teams first.

Thursday Afternoon Croft 1 Team Captained by Irene Ryder finished bottom, this was after coming second in 2017 season and being in the money.  Her team has been beset by either illness in the team or the families of team members.  Irene remarked that they would have been relegated but there was no-where for them to go!  The best player this year was Beryl Charlton who was ably supported by Janet Bevin.  They also lost Nora Campbell as a player and were devastated when Nora died in early December.

Irene is desperate for new players on Thursday afternoon, so anyone wishing to play for her could they speak to her following the meeting.

Thursday Afternoon Croft 2 Team Captained by Glen Haines finished 7th, their best players were Joan and Jenny.

Tuesday Evening Croft Team Captained by Audrey Stokes finished 2nd and were promoted to Division B.  We wish them well when they meet all the new teams in the coming season.  I would also like to mention that Audrey has retired from being the captain, the ladies were very grateful to Audrey for taking them into another Division and we wish Janet well in her new role as team captain.

The team turned out to support Joan Stott and Janet Bevin in the “Player of the Year” at the end of September, unfortunately for Joan, she lost by one in the first round 21/20.  Janet went on to play in the semi-final where she played well but was unfortunately beaten.

Men’s Senior Teams:

A Team:  Captained by Cliff Boucher finished 9th.  He has now handed over to Norman Deakin as Captain, thank you to Cliff for captaining the team for many years.  Good luck to Norman in his new role as Captain.

Norman reports that his team finished 9th out of 12 and hopefully this will prevent them being relegated.  Players of note were Peter Rowles who missed only one match and had 15 wins followed by Norman himself with 14 wins and then Jim Thomason recorded 12 wins.

B Team:  Alan Taylor’s team finished 9th all played very well and it was very much a team effort.  Alan Taylor has now handed over the reins of captaincy to Ken Taylor after looking after this team for a number of years.  Thank you Alan; good luck to Ken in his role as Captain.

C Team:   Eric Stokes’ team finished top and were promoted most of the team deserved a mention as it was very much a team effort.  They were also awarded with a monetary prize for finishing top.

Men’s League Teams

Thursday A Team:  Captained by Cliff Boucher who has retired from his role after acting as Captain of the team for many years.  Derek Ryder has taken over from Cliff as Captain and we wish him well in his new role.

The team finished 5th from the bottom and remains in the ‘B’ Section for the 2017 season.  Special mention goes to Neil Dolan winning the most games (17) and also Norman Deakin and Peter Rowles both had 16 wins from 22 games.

Derek wishes to appeal for more members to join the Thursday A Team as they have lost four of their members, there are only 11 registered players, the team requires 10 for each game.

Thursday B Team:Captained by Adam Taylor have finished joint second and are awaiting news from the league to let them know if they have been promoted.  They have definitely won some money for finishing joint second.  Well done to Adam in his first year as Captain.

Friday Night Team:  Captained by Eric Stokes.  Eric has captained this team since its inception a number of years ago.  He has now handed over the captaincy to Sam Hughes so we wish Sam well in this role.  The team finished 10th in Section D two places down from 2015.  Their best players were Jim Thomason and Roy Wallis also worth a mention is Mansell Osman who played in every game.

I would like to take this opportunity of promoting the President’s Dinner which will be held on Saturday 4 November in the Memorial Hall.  Thank you to all those members who supported us last year, which was I am sure you will agree was a lovely night. We will be selling tickets from mid-July and I hope you will support us again as we definitely would like this event to carry on well into the future.

Finally, the Opening Main is to be held on 10 April, the entry list is available at the back of the hall.  Please add your name if you wish to enter.

I would like to wish everyone a successful and enjoyable season”.
